A head-on collision may appear to answer the lane question from the final vehicle positions alone. Impact forces, braking, steering, rotation, secondary contact, road grade, shoulder drop-off, and post-impact travel can move both vehicles. The investigation should reconstruct the approach and first harmful event rather than treating the resting positions as the entire event.

The point of rest is not automatically the lane position at the moment one vehicle entered the other vehicle’s path.

Start with the roadway rule and its exceptions

G.S. 20-146 generally requires driving on the right half of a sufficiently wide highway and identifies exceptions, including overtaking under the applicable rules, an obstruction, certain three-lane highways, and one-way traffic. The same section addresses marked-lane travel. Identify the roadway configuration and the subsection that could apply before describing a vehicle as left of center.

G.S. 20-150 separately addresses passing to the left of center, available sight distance, no-passing areas, and related exceptions. A centerline crossing attributed to passing, turning, avoiding an obstruction, loss of control, or an unknown movement presents different factual questions.

Measure the roadway and preserve its condition

  • Road name, direction, lane count, lane and shoulder width, center marking, edge line, median, curve, grade, crest, driveway, intersection, work zone, and nearby traffic controls
  • Daylight or darkness, weather, surface condition, standing water, debris, pothole, obstruction, shoulder condition, visibility, and any temporary change
  • Photographs and video taken from each approach with date, time, direction, location, metadata, scale, and an unchanged original file
  • Roadway measurements, survey or scene diagram, maintenance records, resurfacing or striping history, and the source of each dimension

Separate approach evidence from post-impact movement

  • Tire marks, yaw marks, gouges, fluid, debris, glass, vehicle parts, paint transfer, roadway contact, and the first location at which each was observed
  • Damage height, direction, overlap, crush, wheel and suspension condition, steering position, lamp evidence, restraint evidence, and later repair or salvage activity
  • Event-data or telematics source, vehicle identity, download date, custodian, tool and software version, time basis, limitations, and unaltered output
  • Driver and witness vantage point, direction of travel, perceived lane, observation duration, obstruction, uncertainty, and whether the account changed

Use the crash report as an index, not a measurement substitute

Compare the codes, diagram, and narrative with photographs, measurements, statements, vehicle evidence, and supplements. Record whether a diagram is schematic or based on measured points.

Keep lane encroachment, cause, and loss as separate findings

Evidence that a vehicle crossed a centerline may be important without resolving why it crossed, whether an exception applied, what another road user could perceive, whether a mechanical or roadway condition contributed, or which injuries and losses resulted. Preserve competing explanations and the evidence supporting or contradicting each one.
