Mooresville, NC (November 03, 2026) - Hernan Gonzalo Morris Diaz, 41, died Tuesday after a motorcycle crash on northbound I-77 in Mooresville, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. The crash occurred around 8:15 a.m. near mile marker 32, south of Exit 33 for Williamson Road and U.S. 21 in Iredell County.

Troopers said the motorcycle entered the toll lanes to pass another vehicle. As Morris Diaz attempted to return to the general-purpose lanes, the motorcycle struck a delineator. He lost control and was thrown into the toll lanes. The motorcycle continued north before coming to rest in the middle general-purpose lane.

MedCenter Air flew Morris Diaz to CMC-Main hospital with serious injuries, the Highway Patrol said. He died from those injuries later Tuesday.

All northbound lanes closed for more than an hour while troopers investigated at the scene and reopened later that morning. Traffic backed up several miles through the Lake Norman area, with delays reaching Huntersville and Davidson.

Medical Payments Coverage for Motorcycle Injuries

Morris Diaz received emergency hospital care before his death. Whether an insurance policy covers that care depends on its terms. Standard auto Medical Payments coverage excludes injuries sustained while occupying a motorized vehicle with fewer than four wheels. Having that coverage on a car policy therefore does not establish that it applies to a motorcycle injury.

Motorcycle endorsements, which modify policy terms, can differ. A bike accident law firm can assess whether an applicable endorsement provides Medical Payments benefits and which terms and limits govern payment. No coverage information was reported for Morris Diaz.

Coverage for Care Before Death

For a family with questions about medical expenses after a fatal motorcycle accident, the relevant policy determines whether benefits may address care provided before death. The cost of treatment and the coverage purchased are separate questions.
