A crash location needs a reproducible definition before reported-crash data can be compared. A street name alone may refer to a long corridor, several intersections, an interchange, a ramp, or a location that crosses more than one jurisdiction.

Define the geographic unit first

Write down the precise unit that a request or comparison will use. For an intersection, identify the intersection legs and the approaches being included. For a roadway segment, identify the two endpoints, travel direction, route number if applicable, and whether ramps or adjacent lanes are included. Coordinates can be helpful, but they should be paired with a readable location description and the date on which they were checked.

  • The time window, severity definition, and filters used.

Choose a source that answers the actual question

NCDOT’s crash-data page allows requests for a specific intersection or road section over a defined period. Those records concern reported crashes on file; not every crash is reported. A request should state the location definition and time window rather than assume that a broad street name will produce a comparable result.

A map layer can answer a different question. Charlotte’s crash-point layer exposes fields such as date, case number, crash type or level, and coordinates. Its visible fields do not by themselves supply a complete methodology or determine whether every event has been included, so any comparison should document the filters and access date used.

Keep reported-crash and maintenance information separate

Reported-crash data describes events in a chosen geographic unit. Road-maintenance information identifies a different administrative classification. Make any comparison reproducible

Before comparing locations, retain the geographic unit, date range, source, filters, severity measure, and access date. A count without those details can be misleading: a long corridor and a single intersection are not the same unit, and a different date window or crash definition can change the result.
