A vehicle may roll after leaving the travel lane, contacting a curb or soft shoulder, sliding sideways into terrain, striking another object, or experiencing a severe maneuver. The final resting position does not by itself show why control was lost, what initiated the roll, or which contact caused a particular injury.
A rollover sequence should identify the loss-of-control event, roadway departure or contact, trip point if any, beginning of roll, each later contact, final rest, and source for every step.
Divide the event into testable phases
- Pre-crash travel: lane, direction, speed evidence, steering, braking, traffic, visibility, weather, road surface, vehicle load, and driver response
- Departure or instability: lane crossing, shoulder entry, yaw, side slip, wheel drop, curb contact, tire or suspension event, collision, or another proposed trigger
- Rollover initiation: exact ground, object, wheel, rim, tire, vehicle, or maneuver claimed to begin rotation, with supporting and contrary evidence
- Roll and rest: quarter turns, roof or side contacts, glazing, doors, debris, occupant movement, rescue, towing, and final position
Record the scene before it changes
- Road and lane geometry, curve, grade, crown, shoulder width and drop-off, ditch, slope, curb, guardrail, median, embankment, soil, vegetation, and roadside objects
- Tire marks, furrows, gouges, scrapes, disturbed soil, fluid, glass, debris, detached parts, cargo, and measured beginning and ending points
- Native photographs and video from multiple viewpoints, camera location, scale reference, weather, lighting, traffic control, and later repair or grading
- Survey, scan, measurements, coordinate system, notes, person collecting, date, equipment, and known limitation
Use rollover ratings for their stated purpose
NHTSA explains on its vehicle-ratings page that a rollover-resistance rating uses the Static Stability Factor and a dynamic maneuver test. The rating is consumer information about a vehicle model; it is not a reconstruction of a particular used vehicle, road departure, trip point, collision, or injury.
NHTSA’s review of rollover variables discusses pre-crash, rollover-initiation, vehicle, occupant, and event information used in rollover research. A case-specific analysis still requires the actual vehicle, scene, records, and qualified methods.
Read the crash report as an index, not a complete reconstruction
The current North Carolina DMV-349 Instructional Manual defines report fields, sequence-of-events coding, vehicle information, roadway data, diagrams, and narrative expectations. Preserve the original report and any supplement, identify the source of each entry, and compare coded events with photographs, measurements, video, witnesses, vehicle data, and physical evidence.
Preserve the vehicle before repair or disposal
- VIN, configuration, tires, wheels, steering, suspension, brakes, stability-control components, recalls, modifications, prior damage, repair history, and loading
- Undercarriage, wheel and rim marks, soil or material transfer, exterior contacts, roof and pillar damage, glazing, doors, latches, and detached parts
- Tow, storage, access, key, battery, movement, repair estimate, total-loss decision, salvage notice, inspection, and chain of custody
- Nondestructive documentation before any download, cycling, disassembly, testing, sampling, or disposal
Integrate electronic data with physical evidence
49 C.F.R. Part 563 addresses event-data-recorder information for covered vehicles equipped with an EDR. Recorded elements and availability depend on the vehicle and event. A download may capture a short interval and does not replace scene geometry, damage, witness accounts, system limitations, or the full rollover sequence.
