A rollover is not one undifferentiated event. A vehicle may leave its lane, trip on terrain or an object, rotate through several contacts, deform at the roof, deploy restraints, and move occupants inside or outside the compartment. The evidence should preserve those stages and each occupant’s position.

A rollover investigation should separate what initiated the roll, how the roof and restraint systems performed, how each occupant moved, and which mechanism caused each injury.

Preserve the complete vehicle and scene

  • VIN, configuration, weight, tires, wheels, steering, suspension, brakes, stability control, warnings, recalls, and prior changes
  • Road geometry, shoulder, slope, curb, guardrail, ditch, soil, weather, visibility, marks, gouges, debris, and final rest
  • Each exterior contact, glazing, door, latch, pillar, roof rail, roof panel, intrusion, scrape, deformation, and repair
  • Every seat, seat track, head restraint, belt, buckle, latch plate, retractor, anchor, pretensioner, load limiter, and air bag
  • Occupant seating, size, posture, restraint use, contact points, ejection path, rescue, injury, clothing, and personal items

Use roof standards carefully

Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 216a establishes passenger-compartment roof strength requirements for covered vehicles and specifies a compliance test. Application depends on vehicle type, weight, manufacture date, and listed exceptions or options.

Regulatory compliance testing and a real crash are different inquiries. The standard does not by itself prove how a particular used vehicle performed in a particular rollover, whether it had prior damage or alteration, or what caused an occupant’s injury. Preserve certification, design, manufacturing, repair, recall, and vehicle-specific evidence before reaching conclusions.

Inspect the restraint system as a system

Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 209 specifies requirements for seat-belt assemblies and defines components such as buckles, retractors, webbing, attachment hardware, and load limiters. Photograph components in place before cycling, unlatching, cutting, removing, or testing them.

  • Webbing position, marks, loading, cuts, contamination, spool-out, retractor state, buckle and latch condition, and anchor deformation
  • Pretensioner and air-bag deployment, warning status, seat position, occupant classification, side-curtain coverage, and interior contacts
  • Emergency or rescue cutting separated from crash damage, with removed pieces retained and labeled
  • Owner’s manual instructions, service and recall history, prior collision or repair, and post-crash access
  • Qualified inspection protocol, nondestructive work first, photographs, measurements, notes, samples, and chain of custody

Preserve short-duration electronic data

49 C.F.R. Part 563 addresses data for covered vehicles equipped with an EDR. Depending on the vehicle and event, recorded elements can concern speed, throttle, brake, change in velocity, multiple events, belt status, warnings, and restraint deployment. The file is not a complete reconstruction and must be interpreted with physical evidence and known recording limits.

Connect injury to a supported mechanism

Roof deformation, nonuse of a belt, a deployed air bag, or ejection does not alone identify the causal sequence. Compare occupant contacts, compartment space, belt and air-bag evidence, medical findings, rescue records, roll direction and count, vehicle motion, and alternative explanations. Keep diagnosis and engineering opinions within each witness’s qualifications.
