Insurance documents can identify coverages, claims, and communications, but they do not establish fault, coverage for a particular loss, or the value of a claim.

Create a coverage-document file

  • Policy declarations, identification cards, notices, correspondence, claim numbers, and contact information
  • The date each document was received, the sender, the policy or claim it references, and any stated response date
  • Vehicle ownership, registration, repair, tow, storage, rental, medical, and employment records kept with their original source
  • Questions about missing pages, names, dates, limits, exclusions, or terms kept separate from assumptions about coverage

Read the current public information as a starting point

The North Carolina Department of Insurance’s auto-coverage information describes common categories of automobile coverage. A general description does not determine the terms, limits, exclusions, or application of a particular policy.

The related car-crash communication log guide explains how to preserve insurer communications with their source and date. A Charlotte car-accident claim requires a fact-specific review.
