A communication log can preserve who said what and when after a crash, but it does not determine fault, coverage, injury, or the value of a claim.

Make one dated log

  • The date, time, person, organization, method, and purpose of each call, email, letter, portal message, or meeting
  • Claim and report numbers, names of attachments, response dates, and a copy of the original communication
  • What was personally observed, what another person said, and what remains unknown kept as separate entries
  • Requests for documents, records received, unanswered questions, and any deadline stated in a notice

Keep the original communication

The North Carolina Department of Insurance’s after-an-accident information is a useful starting point for insurer-related steps. A log does not replace the original document or decide how a particular communication should be answered.
