A settlement document can have consequences beyond the payment amount, so it should be identified and read before a person decides whether to sign it.

Keep the complete document set

  • The offer, release, settlement agreement, check, cover letter, email, and any attachments
  • The sender, claim number, date received, response date, and contact information
  • A copy of every version and a record of questions asked or answers received
  • Related insurance, medical, repair, employment, and incident records kept in original form

Questions that need a document-specific answer

What parties, events, claims, payments, deadlines, confidentiality terms, or releases does the document identify? Is any information missing? A general guide cannot determine what a particular document means or whether accepting it is appropriate.

The related document-preservation guide gives a broader checklist. A Charlotte car-accident claim requires a fact-specific review.
