A rear impact describes where vehicles contacted; it does not by itself reconstruct why they contacted, how many impacts occurred, or which injuries followed. The analysis changes when traffic is moving, a lane change is underway, several vehicles are involved, or the lead vehicle has already struck something else.

A rear-end collision reconstruction should account for vehicle motion, following distance, perception and response, braking, lane position, roadway, visibility, damage, electronic data, occupants, and medical chronology—not assume the impact direction decides every issue.

Build the collision sequence

  • Each vehicle’s lane, direction, speed range, spacing, steering, braking, and final position
  • Traffic controls, congestion, construction, grade, curve, lighting, weather, surface, and sight distance
  • Whether the lead vehicle stopped gradually, stopped suddenly, changed lanes, reversed, lost power, or had already collided
  • The number and order of impacts, occupant movement, air-bag and restraint evidence, and post-impact movement

Apply the following-distance rule to the facts

G.S. 20-152 requires a driver not to follow more closely than is reasonable and prudent, considering vehicle speed, traffic, and highway condition. The rule calls for a fact-specific analysis rather than a fixed distance that decides every rear-end case.

Evaluate the lead vehicle and other causes

Brake-light condition, signaling, lane entry, roadway obstruction, a prior collision, sudden mechanical failure, traffic-control operation, and a third vehicle can matter. North Carolina’s contributory-negligence doctrine can make supported allegations about another person’s conduct significant, so competing accounts should be tested against objective evidence.

Handle multi-vehicle impacts separately

In a chain collision, identify which vehicle contacted which surface, when occupants felt each impact, whether a vehicle was pushed into another, and whether there was time or space for an intervening response. Damage transfers, event data, video, witness accounts, and final positions may help distinguish separate impacts.

Preserve physical and electronic evidence

  • Wide, midrange, and close photographs of vehicles, scene, marks, debris, signs, signals, and obstructions
  • Vehicle inspections, repair estimates, measurements, restraint evidence, event data, cameras, telematics, and infotainment records
  • Nearby business, residence, traffic, dash-camera, transit, and fleet video before routine overwrite
  • Dispatch, 911, body-camera, tow, storage, repair, weather, roadway, and signal-maintenance records

Use the crash report as one source

Compare the report with the scene diagram, supplements, photographs, video, statements, measurements, citations, and later evidence. A report is important, but it is not a substitute for the entire reconstruction.

Connect the collision to the medical record

Record occupant position, head and body movement, restraint use, immediate symptoms, emergency response, examinations, diagnoses, treatment, restrictions, recovery, and later events. Vehicle damage cannot diagnose a person, and symptom description alone does not establish every medical cause.
