Durham, NC (October 20, 2026) - A three-vehicle crash temporarily closed all southbound lanes of Interstate 885 in Durham, North Carolina. The crash was reported before 8 a.m. Tuesday near Exit 9 and Angier Avenue, close to downtown Durham in Durham County.
Scene video showed a white van with front-end damage positioned against the rear of another vehicle. A red car was on its side, and debris was scattered across the roadway.
All southbound lanes later reopened. Whether anyone was injured was not reported.
Assessing Responsibility When Three Vehicles Collide
With three vehicles involved, identifying which vehicles touched is only part of assessing responsibility. The sequence of impacts and each driver’s actions also matter. A photograph taken afterward can show damage and resting positions, but it cannot resolve those questions on its own.
North Carolina’s contributory negligence rule can bar an injured driver’s claim against another responsible party when the driver’s own negligence contributed to the collision. It does not simply reduce the payment by a percentage. An auto accident settlement lawyer can review the basis for a fault allegation and whether a legal exception applies to the circumstances.
When Responsibility Is Disputed
An insurer’s initial assessment does not necessarily resolve a disagreement over fault. Legal advice can help someone understand the grounds for that assessment and whether an injury claim may be available.
