In a chain-reaction or pileup, one vehicle may be struck more than once, pushed into another lane, rotate, rebound, stop, or receive a later impact. Drivers and passengers may perceive different portions of the event. A useful analysis preserves those differences and tests them against physical and time evidence.
A multi-vehicle crash should be reconstructed as a timed sequence of separate movements and contacts, not reduced to one report code or a single statement that every impact happened at once.
Assign a stable identity to every participant
- Vehicle letter or number, year, make, model, color, plate, vehicle identification number, owner, driver, passengers, insurer, and claim number
- Lane, direction, approximate position, traffic phase, speed range if supported, braking, steering, signals, visibility, and roadway condition before the first known event
- Trailer, cargo, load, commercial markings, employer, trip purpose, borrowed or rental status, and other connected entity
- Witness viewpoint, attention, obstruction, distance, event heard or seen, and statement date
- Unknown fields left open rather than filled from another participant’s account
Create one row for each contact or avoidance event
- Sequence number and estimated time or interval
- Vehicle or object A, vehicle or object B, contact points, overlap, direction, and resulting movement
- Braking, steering, lane change, acceleration, loss of control, debris, road departure, or secondary contact
- Occupant movement, restraint or airbag event, reported symptom onset, and whether a later impact is alleged to have caused a separate injury
- Source, confidence, competing account, and evidence still needed
Read the report without converting it into a verdict
The NCDMV DMV-349 instructional manual defines report fields for vehicles, sequences of events, contributing circumstances, diagrams, narratives, injuries, and related information. Use the current definitions and compare coded entries with the narrative, diagram, photographs, supplements, and underlying observations.
G.S. 20-166.1 addresses reports and investigations for specified crashes. A report is an important lead, but the sequence should also be tested against vehicle damage, scene evidence, video, data, witnesses, and later corrections.
Synchronize independent time sources
- 911, dispatch, body-camera, dash-camera, traffic or business video, toll, access, and roadway-system timestamps
- Event data, telematics, infotainment, phone, navigation, camera, and diagnostic records with clock accuracy and collection method
- Skid, yaw, gouge, debris, fluid, final-rest, roadway geometry, grade, sight distance, lighting, and weather
- Damage profiles, paint transfer, crush, intrusion, measurements, scans, repair estimates, and component condition
- Explicit time-zone, clock-offset, frame-rate, missing interval, and uncertainty notes
Separate observation from technical opinion
A witness may describe what was perceived. A technical reconstruction may require methods, measurements, assumptions, calculations, data validation, and qualified opinion. North Carolina Evidence Rule 702 addresses qualified expert testimony and sufficient facts or data, reliable principles and methods, and reliable application. Software output or a diagram alone does not establish that foundation.
Connect sequence to responsibility and injury carefully
- Conduct before each event and the available perception-response interval
- Whether an earlier contact created the position for a later contact
- Separate allegations against each driver or entity and contrary evidence
- Medical evidence for the claimed mechanism, onset, condition, and effect of multiple impacts
- Unresolved questions that could change responsibility, causation, coverage, or value
