After a truck crash, immediate safety and accurate scene records matter more than assumptions about responsibility or claim value.

Prioritize safety and emergency directions

If anyone needs emergency help or the scene is unsafe, follow emergency instructions. North Carolina G.S. 20-166.1 addresses notice for reportable crashes. The statute is not a complete guide to every duty or claim question.

Preserve the initial record when it is safe

  • Location, vehicles, carrier information, license plates, road conditions, traffic controls, photographs, video, and witnesses
  • Report number, names of responding agencies, and communications
  • Medical, repair, insurance, expense, and employment records retained in original form
  • A list of records that may exist but are not yet available
