A truck crash may involve records beyond those available after an ordinary passenger-vehicle collision.

Commercial hours-of-service records

The current 49 C.F.R. Part 395 contains federal hours-of-service requirements for covered commercial motor-vehicle operations. Applicability, exemptions, electronic logs, and specific limits depend on the operation and regulation involved. A regulation does not independently establish the cause or legal responsibility for a crash.

Preserve information early

  • Carrier, vehicle, driver, route, cargo, report number, photos, video, and witness information
  • Dispatch, electronic logging, inspection, maintenance, loading, and communication records when available
  • Medical, repair, insurance, and expense records retained in original form

The related commercial driver-hours guide explains the rule’s limited role. A Charlotte trucking-accident claim requires a fact-specific review.
