Charlotte, NC (April 10, 2023) - Local news reports indicate that the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) is actively searching for a suspect truck driver involved in a hit-and-run accident on Statesville Avenue late Monday night.
Police are asking for the public’s help in locating a gold or tan Ford F-150 extended cab pickup truck, which is now missing its Ford emblem and has damage to its front grille. The truck was on Statesville Avenue around 11:30 p.m. when it struck 25-year-old Shayne Waida, who was crossing the road. The driver then fled the scene, turning onto LaSalle Street and leaving Waida unresponsive on the ground.
Paramedics rushed Waida to the hospital, where he is being treated for life-threatening injuries. According to the CMPD, traffic cameras captured the truck turning onto Statesville Avenue from Cindy Lane just prior to the accident. It was last seen heading toward Interstate 77, north of uptown Charlotte, close to Atando Avenue and LaSalle Street.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the hit-and-run or the whereabouts of the suspect truck to call Detective Pressley at 704-432-2169, extension 2. Alternatively, the public can leave information anonymously by contacting Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or visiting http://charlottecrimestoppers.com/.
The CMPD has released a photo of the truck, emphasizing that it likely has damage to the front end, grille, and will be missing the Ford badge. By sharing this information, they hope that someone will recognize the truck or its driver and come forward with crucial information that can help bring the responsible party to justice.
In the meantime, the local community is left to grapple with the senselessness of this hit-and-run and the life-threatening injuries sustained by Shayne Waida. It is a stark reminder of the importance of driving responsibly and remaining alert on the road, especially in heavily populated areas.
