Greenville, NC (January 16, 2023) - Monday night just after midnight, Greenville Police Department responded to a call of a car crashing into an apartment complex in Greenville, North Carolina. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found that a Nissan Maxima had crashed into an apartment at The District at Tar River complex. The driver of the vehicle, 25-year-old Aveon Isaiah Collins-Smith, was found to have been shot in the chest before crashing his car. Despite life-saving measures administered on the scene, Collins-Smith died at ECU Medical Health Center.
The resident of the apartment, Caleb White, was also taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. White recounted that he was in his living room when he first heard gunshots and then the car crashing into his apartment, knocking out the lights. He was able to crawl to his front door and call the police. White was quoted as saying, "The smoke in the living room, I couldn't really tell what was going on and I didn't know if the car was going to blow up or if something was going to catch on fire. I was just asking the people above me to call for help and call the police because I couldn't even assess how injured I was."
Criminal Investigation is Ongoing
The incident is believed to be a targeted attack. Police stated that they have received information that the shooting is not a random act and they are investigating it as a targeted attack.
Due to the damage caused by the crash, both the downstairs and upstairs apartments are not habitable. Jordon Spelce, manager of the apartment complex, said they have found housing for both tenants. The police department continues to investigate the incident and is urging anyone with information to come forward.
