St. Helena, NC (August 3, 2023) - Local news stations have announced a deadly accident that occurred on the southbound U.S. 117 just a day prior. Tragically, the crash claimed the life of Lynnette Smalley, a 54-year-old Jacksonville resident. "In route to Novant Medical Center in Wilmington, with a paramedic driving and one EMT also on board in the rear of the ambulance," Sgt. Jason Casteen with NC State Highway Patrol said, describing the scene prior to the incident. The ambulance, Pender EMS unit #1, was blindsided by the collision. This sudden turn of events left both EMS workers, Holly Bauer and Catherine Wortman, seriously injured.
Just moments before the impact, a keen-eyed citizen had spotted Ms. Soga's erratic driving behavior and reported it to the Pender County Sheriff’s Office. "A concerned citizen observed Ms. Soga driving erratically and called the Pender County Sheriff’s Office via 911 to report her observations. Within moments of that 911 call, Ms. Soga traveled across the centerline and struck the ambulance head on," Sgt. Casteen explained. However, help could not arrive in time to prevent the disaster.
Now, the law isn't taking this lightly. Soga is facing charges for DWI, reckless driving, and more charges are expected to be added. Although she's currently in critical condition, making it impossible for law enforcement to speak with her, a blood sample was procured for further examination at the State Crime Lab.
The crash didn't only involve the ambulance and Soga's vehicle. Two other vehicles had to swerve off the road to dodge the accident, suffering some damage in the process. Another car was struck by debris. In total, three vehicles and 13 people, including children, were tangled up in this horrifying event.
The emergency response was swift, with Novant Health activating its mass casualty protocol. "Based on early reports from the scene, we mobilized additional team members this afternoon under our mass casualty protocol. This proactive response is designed to ensure the needed personnel and resources are available to respond to the incident. We appreciate the caring clinicians and team members who quickly jumped into action to support our patients," a Novant Health spokesperson stated.
