Rocky Mount, NC (September 24, 2023) - Local news outlets report that a high-speed chase in the early hours of Sunday morning ended with two Rocky Mount officers injured and a Virginia suspect under arrest.
The chase kicked off around the 3100 block of West Gypsy Trail shortly after 3 a.m. Officers had been dispatched in response to reports about a suspicious truck. On their arrival, the two officers came across Bernard Lamont Ruth, a 38-year-old man from Virginia, parked in what appeared to be a pickup truck with its headlights still blazing. Suspecting him to be under the influence of alcohol, they decided to engage him in conversation.
However, things took a dangerous turn when Ruth, deciding he didn't want to stick around for a chat, shifted his truck into drive and sped off, in what onlookers would later describe as "at a high rate of speed." In the ensuing chaos, one officer got trapped in Ruth's vehicle and was dragged for a bit before he could free himself, suffering a shoulder injury in the process. The other officer, taken by surprise by Ruth's sudden departure, lost his balance and ended up with minor cuts and bruises.
Not ones to be deterred by their injuries, both officers quickly regained their composure, hopped back into their squad cars, and gave chase. They trailed Ruth along West Raleigh Boulevard, but before they could intercept him, he lost control and crashed his truck into a residence at 1267 W. Raleigh Blvd.
Following the crash, a subsequent search of Ruth's vehicle turned up two firearms. Considering Ruth's status as a convicted felon, this was a significant find. Local authorities have since pressed several charges against him including two counts of assault on a law enforcement officer with a deadly weapon, two counts of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, felony flee elude arrest, and other traffic-related offenses.
The Nash County Jail is currently Ruth's temporary residence, where he's being held on an $80,000 secured bond. Rocky Mount's Police Chief, Robert Hassell, remarked on the incident, saying, “I'm thankful that both officers in this incident are going home today and a repeat criminal was taken off the streets.”
