A rideshare crash file should identify each person’s role and the driver’s app status at the relevant time. A passenger trip, an available driver waiting for a request, and a driver transporting a private acquaintance can involve different facts and insurance questions.

The rideshare file should preserve the trip record, app status, driver and vehicle identities, platform communications, personal and platform insurance positions, and the complete collision evidence.

Capture digital and trip records promptly

  • Trip receipt, request and acceptance time, pickup and destination, route, driver profile, vehicle, fare, cancellation, and app screenshots
  • Whether the driver was offline, available, matched, traveling to pickup, or carrying a passenger, with source and timestamp
  • Passenger, driver, owner, platform, personal insurer, rideshare insurer, claim numbers, adjusters, and written positions
  • Crash report, photographs, video, witnesses, medical records, bills, work records, and property loss

Do not infer coverage from a logo or app screenshot

Preserve the complete policy forms, endorsements, app records, and written insurer positions. A platform-branded vehicle or active phone does not by itself establish the legal status or applicable coverage at the instant of the crash.

Use official records for the questions they can answer

North Carolina General Statute 20-280.5 addresses transportation-network-company insurance requirements. See North Carolina General Statute 20-280.5.

The state insurance checklist identifies core driver, vehicle, policy, insurer, witness, and scene information. See North Carolina Department of Insurance: After an Accident.

Connect the file to the next decision

Create separate issue rows for responsibility, app period, personal coverage, platform coverage, injury, and property damage. The related North Carolina rideshare passenger claim guide provides a focused companion resource.
