The multi-car collision occurred around 5:45 p.m., shutting down the freeway for nearly four hours.
Witnesses and North Carolina State Highway Patrol indicated that heavy smoke from a burning wheat field just west of the highway suddenly impaired visibility, leading to the chaotic pile-up.
