Fremont, NC (June 8, 2023) - Local news outlets report that an unfortunate accident in Wayne County on Tuesday evening resulted in more than 20 vehicles and a tanker truck piling up on Interstate 795 at mile marker 12, south of Black Creek. The multi-car collision occurred around 5:45 p.m., shutting down the freeway for nearly four hours.

Witnesses and North Carolina State Highway Patrol indicated that heavy smoke from a burning wheat field just west of the highway suddenly impaired visibility, leading to the chaotic pile-up. Drivers in the crash reported that there were no initial warnings of the thick smoke, but it engulfed the highway, reducing visibility to almost zero.

Sgt. Fowler from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol affirmed that no vehicles caught fire during the accident. He said, “All smoke at the scene was from the burning wheat field.” A total of 14 people, including retired military man Melvin Spruill's lady friend from Fayetteville, were rushed to local hospitals for medical care.

No life-threatening injuries were reported, despite the large-scale accident. Rodney Dancy, the Assistant Director of Wilson County Emergency Management, said, “It was about 22 vehicles that were involved all together.” He also mentioned a minivan that hit the tanker and caught on fire but was quickly extinguished.

In the wake of the incident, southbound lanes became impassable due to the wreckage, causing traffic disruptions. The highway was finally cleared and reopened around 9:30 p.m.

Many eyewitnesses, including Melvin Spruill, blamed the sudden visibility issues on smoke from the burning field. Spruill described his experience, saying, “The further you got into the smoke, the darker it got and the less you could see.” He was one of the many people who bravely stopped to help others amid the chaos.

However, Brooks Barnes, the farmer who was burning the fields, defended his actions. He presented an open burn permit and stated that such practices were common in eastern North Carolina. He expressed regret over the incident but suggested the blame should fall on drivers who braked too quickly. He said, “I hate that it happened, but I don’t feel that I’m responsible."

The North Carolina Forest Service investigated the fire’s origin, confirming that it was an agricultural burn conducted by a farmer on private property. Philip Jackson, a public information officer from the service, stated, “It was not a wildfire. It did not escape containment. He had a burn permit in compliance.”

This harrowing incident brought together six or seven agencies from Wilson and Wayne counties, including about 50 firefighters from the Black Creek Volunteer Fire Department and other departments. Despite communication challenges due to different radio systems, the teams worked together to handle the situation. Black Creek Volunteer Fire Department Chief Jeff Collier commented, "They worked like a ballet. Everybody came together. They did what they needed to do." Thankfully, no firefighters were injured during the response.

This unfortunate event serves as a stark reminder of how quickly circumstances can change on the road, and the importance of staying vigilant and prepared for the unexpected.
