Lake Junaluska, NC (February 12, 2023) - As stated in the local press, the Lake Junaluska community was shocked after a fatal car crash that took the life of 17-year-old Alexis Grace Sherrill and left two other teenagers injured on Sunday around 3:34 PM.
According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, a 1989 Ford F-150 was traveling south on South Lake Shore Drive in the community when the vehicle veered off the road and over an embankment. The truck rolled twice after it landed, throwing Sherrill from the vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene by Haywood County coroner Clay Bryson.
The driver, Ethan Lee Durham, 17, of Canton, NC and another passenger, 17-year-old Karissa Bradshaw of Waynesville, were both transported to Mission Hospital in Asheville with non-life-threatening injuries. Trooper Rohn Silvers says that speed was the contributing factor for the crash and Durham has been charged with careless and reckless driving and misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.
"She always showed me true kindness." said a friend of Sherrill. "She had the most beautiful soul." Meanwhile, Sherrill's mother, Natasha Potter, wrote on Facebook, "I sit here with a broken heart knowing that my baby is gone. Lexi was so beautiful, and stubborn, and strong."
The usually serene community was shaken by the tragic event. Lake Junaluska representatives say the teenagers were not connected to the Lake Junaluska Retreat Center or the community at large, they were just guests on the grounds. Lake Junaluska representatives also say the posted speed limit is 15 miles an hour with occasional speed bumps to encourage a slow pace.
The peaceful Lake Junaluska community was shaken by the car crash that claimed the life of a young girl. Resident Haidee Wilson commented on the difficulty of navigating the narrow South Lake Shore Drive ""This is sort of a blind curve here and it’s hard to see and maybe people take the curve too fast. Maybe some things can be prevented," she says. Maybe a metal guardrail rather than a wooden one on certain areas."
With heavy hearts, Lake Junaluska executive director, Ken Howle, sent a message to community members regarding the accident: "With a heavy heart, we share that today, February 12, at approximately 4:00 pm, a single-vehicle accident occurred along South Lakeshore Drive. Within minutes, Lake Junaluska Security and emergency responders were on the scene. One passenger tragically did not survive the accident, and North Carolina State Highway Patrol is in the process of notifying the family. Please join me in praying for everyone involved in this tragic accident so that they may feel God’s comfort and strength."
