Jennifer Camillo-Melendez, 37, and her daughter Mikaela Camillo were visiting family for spring break when the accident occurred. They were in a Jeep driven by 30-year-old Kiara Shalimar Guadalupe-Mercado, who reportedly failed to yield at a stop sign on Dragstrip Road, leading to a collision with a Kenworth dump truck traveling south on NC 242. The impact caused Mikaela and another child to be ejected from the vehicle.
Authorities said that neither Jennifer nor Mikaela were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. The other child, whose identity is withheld due to their age, was taken to WakeMed Raleigh with life-threatening injuries. The child's current condition remains unknown. Joel Guadalupe-Figuera, 48, another passenger in the Jeep, was injured and taken to WakeMed Raleigh for treatment.
The driver of the dump truck, identified as 28-year-old Nikin Henry, sustained minor injuries and was taken to the hospital. Guadalupe-Mercado, who also suffered minor injuries, has been charged with two counts of misdemeanor death by vehicle, two counts of child restraint violation, and failure to stop at a stop sign.
A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help support the family of Jennifer Camillo-Melendez during this difficult time. Family friend Liz Melendreras, who started the fundraiser, expressed her grief over the tragic event, saying, "I can't even put it into words, to be honest."
Johnny Meeks, an employee at McLamb's Gas and Supply near the intersection, commented on the recurring accidents at the site, stating, "Too many wrecks and too many lives lost."
