Hollister, NC (March 15, 2023) - Local news outlets report that a traumatic event unfolded in Halifax County when a 10th-grade student from Haliwa-Saponi Tribal School was hit by a car while getting off a school bus, resulting in serious injuries.

On Wednesday, March 15, 17-year-old Tillman Mitchell from Hollister, North Carolina, was exiting a school bus at around 4:30 p.m. near Julius Davis Court on N.C. Highway 561, south of Hollister. The school bus had its stop arm down when a westbound 2022 Tesla Model Y driven by 51-year-old Howard Gene Yee of Roanoke Rapids slammed into Mitchell. Sky 5 footage revealed the Tesla's broken windshield and a large dent in the hood.

Following the accident, Mitchell was taken to WakeMed with life-threatening injuries. Yee was charged with passing a stopped school bus striking a person and reckless driving. He was placed in the Halifax County Jail under a $25,000 secured bond.

Haliwa-Saponi Tribal School Principal Melissa Richardson described the incident as a "traumatic event that has deeply affected us." She urged the community to keep Mitchell and his family in their thoughts and prayers while hoping for a full recovery.

We understand that there will be a variety of emotions and responses to what has occurred; therefore, please know that our student support services team are available at the school to assist any students or staff who may need special attention or support. At this time, I ask that you please join me in keeping this student and his family in your thoughts and prayers today and in the coming days while we remain hopeful for a full recovery.

Richardson announced that school would be dismissed early on March 16. Additionally, the student support services team has been made available at the school to assist any students or staff in need of special attention or support.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation reported that N.C. 561 was closed for about a half hour following the crash. State Highway Patrol and the local Sheriff's Department are currently conducting a full investigation into the accident.

Haliwa-Saponi Tribal School, located on the border of Halifax and Warren counties, aims to provide learning opportunities while reflecting the "vibrant energy of the Haliwa-Saponi Tribe." According to the tribe's website, the name Haliwa is derived from the two counties of Halifax and Warren, which are the ancestral homelands of the Saponi People dating back to the early 18th century.
