Fayetteville, NC (May 26, 2024) - Local news outlets report that an El Paso man is in critical condition after surviving a fiery plane crash near Fayetteville, North Carolina this past weekend. Jerry Bueno has months of surgeries and physical therapy ahead after surviving the crash on Sunday, May 26, according to his family.
The plane, identified as a Piper PA-28-140, a single-propeller aircraft, crashed and caught fire near Gray’s Creek Airport south of Fayetteville in Cumberland County. According to Raul Carreon, a friend of Bueno, the crash occurred shortly after the plane took off. The engine stalled at about 500 to 600 feet, causing the plane to dive into some trees.
Bueno, who was visiting friends in North Carolina, was one of the passengers on the plane. He sustained multiple fractures, a broken jaw, and other severe injuries, including an impending foot amputation. He is also facing months of recovery. Carreon, who considers Bueno his "right hand" in their construction work, emphasized the severity of Bueno’s injuries and the long road to recovery ahead.
Witnesses stated that the pilot, Byrant Pasko, displayed incredible bravery by going back into the burning wreckage to save Bueno, sustaining third-degree burns to his hands in the process. Another passenger, Sean Yocum, was also seriously injured. Both passengers remain hospitalized with serious burns and broken bones.
This tragic incident marks the second plane crash near Gray’s Creek Airport in the last four years, with a previous crash in 2020 injuring a flight instructor and three students. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is expected to resume an investigation into the crash on Tuesday.
