Gray’s Creek, NC (May 26, 2024) - According to local news sources, a small plane crashed and caught fire near Gray’s Creek Airport in Cumberland County on Sunday morning. The incident occurred around 10:21 a.m. when a single-engine Piper PA-28-140, carrying three individuals, went down shortly after takeoff.

Witnesses reported that the plane struck several trees before breaking apart and becoming engulfed in flames. The crash site was located near Butler Nursery Road, approximately two miles from the airport, in a heavily wooded area. Residents nearby rushed to assist the passengers, although the extent of their injuries was initially unclear.

Fire crews from Gray’s Creek Fire Department Station 24, Cotton Fire Rescue, and Gray’s Creek Station 18 responded promptly to the scene. Pieces of the wreckage were found singed and nearly disintegrated from the intense fire, with several trees broken where the plane had clipped them.

One individual sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to a trauma center by Valley Air 1. The other two passengers were transported to local hospitals for treatment. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are conducting investigations into the cause of the crash. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) announced that the wreckage would be moved to an offsite facility for further examination in the coming days.

This crash recalls a previous incident in 2020, when a small plane crashed at Gray’s Creek Airport during an Aviation Exploration Day, injuring three students and a pilot.
