University City, NC (May 12, 2023) - Local news outlets report a driver is facing charges after crashing into an ambulance and injuring multiple people, including two paramedics, in University City. The incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. at the intersection of North Tryon Street and West Mallard Creek Church Road.
Medic Unit 62 had initially responded to an unrelated crash involving an SUV and a black car. While paramedics were treating a patient from the first accident, 19-year-old Brian Ogbonna allegedly ran a red light and crashed his 2016 black Nissan Altima into the parked ambulance. The force of the collision was so strong that it knocked the ambulance over.
Two Medic employees were taken to the hospital with injuries. Both were released Friday morning and are recovering at home. "Our thoughts are with all involved. We are extremely grateful for those who responded on scene, including our own," Medic officials said. The patient from the initial crash was also taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Ogbonna was transported to the hospital with serious injuries. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department obtained warrants against him for felony failure to move over and three counts of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. Authorities confirmed that speeding was a factor in the crash.
Jon Studnek, the deputy director at Mecklenburg EMS, expressed concern about the tragic event. "To see the horrific damage that could occur in an instant while our providers are rendering aid to patients, just, it tears me up," he said. Studnek also urged drivers to be cautious around emergency vehicles: "These are tragedies that can be prevented if people slow down and pull over when they see red lights or blue lights."
One person who was in the vehicle that crashed into the ambulance also suffered serious injuries. The initial crash's cause has not been disclosed, and there's no word on the condition of the patient who MEDIC was originally treating or the driver of the car that hit all of them. Ogbonna will be charged when he is released from the hospital.
