The latest incident occurred shortly before 10 p.m. on Monday in the 800 block of Ellis Road. Frederick Howell, a 53-year-old resident of Durham, was riding his bicycle southbound on Ellis Road when he was struck from behind by a vehicle. The driver fled the scene, leaving Howell severely injured. He was transported to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Witnesses described the suspect vehicle as a dark or black Polaris Razor or a similar off-road "side-by-side" vehicle with reflective wording on the back. The vehicle was last seen heading south on Ellis Road near Riddle Road. Speed appeared to be a factor in the crash, according to Durham Police.
Frederick Howell was only two minutes away from his home when the tragic accident happened. His loved ones have started a memorial with flowers at the crash site. "I'm still trying to believe it," said Sandra Howell, Frederick's mother. Howell's family expressed their grief and shock over the sudden loss. They shared that Frederick was well-known in the Bull City and was affectionately nicknamed "Fruity" by his family due to his chubby appearance as a baby.
The Durham Police Department reported four fatal hit-and-run crashes between January and May, with three occurring this month alone. Family members of the victims emphasized that these individuals were more than just statistics. Howell's daughter, Alexia Powell, stated, "He will be missed a lot, from friends and family. I know that. He didn't get hit that far from the house. I could have picked him up. My uncle could have picked him up." Howell's other daughter, Stephanie, had a message for the driver responsible for her father's death: "You have to be mindful of not just yourself. Those around you too."
In the other two deadly hit-and-run cases in May, arrests have been made. However, police are still searching for the suspect who fatally injured Howell just minutes from his home.
