A search result, advertisement, social-media account, text message, or referral may provide a lawyer’s name, but it does not by itself verify who is communicating or whether representation has begun. Before sharing medical records, a Social Security number, insurance credentials, payment information, photographs, or a complete event account, confirm the lawyer, firm, office, and communication channel through independent sources.

Identity verification should connect the person, active license, firm, office, domain, telephone number, secure intake method, and written engagement status before sensitive records or money are sent.

Start with the official membership record

The North Carolina State Bar Membership Directory identifies members and states whether a lawyer is active and eligible to practice law in North Carolina. A listing may also link to a final disciplinary decision or order. Search the person’s full name and compare the State Bar number, status, city, and contact information with what the caller, website, or message provides.

  • Lawyer’s full name, State Bar number, status, listed city, public contact information, and date checked
  • Firm name and any trade name; office address; website domain; email domain; main telephone number; and person who answered
  • Name and role of the person communicating, including whether that person is a lawyer, employee, intake vendor, referral source, or another participant
  • Any mismatch, explanation requested, independent callback made, result, and unresolved identity question

Use an independently obtained contact route

Do not verify a surprising email, text, payment request, or document only by replying to the same message. Obtain the office number from the State Bar record or a separately verified firm website, then call and ask the office to confirm the sender, matter, request, and secure delivery method. Type the known domain rather than following an unfamiliar sign-in link.

  • Look-alike domain, changed letter, added hyphen, free email account, unexpected QR code, shortened link, or unfamiliar portal
  • Urgent demand for a password, security code, wire, gift card, cryptocurrency, remote computer access, or payment to a different name
  • Request for a complete medical or financial file before conflicts and representation status are explained
  • Refusal to provide the responsible lawyer’s name, State Bar number, office callback number, written scope, or executed document copy

Verify public statements without treating them as engagement terms

North Carolina Rule of Professional Conduct 7.1 prohibits false or misleading communications about a lawyer or legal services, including material misrepresentations and unsubstantiated comparisons. A public statement still should be checked against the membership record, firm identity, written scope, fee agreement, and the facts of the individual matter.

The State Bar’s Finding a Lawyer page directs the public to its licensed-lawyer directory and disciplinary resources and supplies questions to consider before hiring counsel. A review score, advertisement position, award badge, directory label, or social-media following is not a substitute for official identity and written engagement information.

Limit what is shared before the relationship is clear

  • Begin with enough information for conflict and matter screening: names of involved parties, general event type, date, and urgent dates
  • Ask which details should be sent now, why they are needed, who will receive them, how they will be protected, and how long they will be retained
  • Confirm whether the discussion is only a preliminary consultation, whether the firm has accepted the matter, and which deadlines remain the caller’s responsibility
  • Keep the engagement or non-engagement writing, fee and expense terms, scope and exclusions, responsible lawyer, staff contacts, portal address, and executed copies

Create a short verification record

Record the date and source of each check, the directory result, numbers called, domain used, people who confirmed the request, documents received, and any corrected information. If identity cannot be reconciled, do not send sensitive records or funds through the questioned channel. Preserve the message and seek verification through an independent route.
