Insurance coverage after a serious car accident is not always limited to one policy. A collision may involve liability coverage, underinsured motorist coverage, medical payments coverage, an employer’s commercial policy, or another source of compensation. Identifying each applicable policy can affect how losses are documented, how negotiations develop, and whether a proposed resolution fairly reflects […]
Low-back pain after a car accident may stay near the spine, spread into the buttock, or travel down a leg. A clinician may consider lumbar radiculopathy when a nerve root appears irritated or compressed, but the diagnosis depends on the history, examination, and other clinical information. The legal question of whether a collision caused or aggravated the condition is a separate issue that requires a complete chronology and appropriately qualified medical analysis.
Radiating leg symptoms are different from nonspecific low-back pain, but their appearance after a collision does not by itself establish a lumbar nerve-root diagnosis or prove what caused the condition.
Put urgent medical needs first
MedlinePlus describes sciatica as pain, weakness, numbness, or tingling involving the sciatic nerve and notes that symptoms can affect the lower back, buttock, and leg. New loss of bladder or bowel control, major weakness, numbness in the saddle area, fever, unexplained weight loss, or symptoms following a serious injury can require prompt medical attention. A website record should never be used to delay an examination or replace a clinician’s instructions.
Create a symptom map instead of a general pain label
- Date and time of onset, first body location, side, path down the leg, and whether symptoms reach the thigh, calf, ankle, or foot
- Pain, burning, tingling, numbness, weakness, cramping, altered reflexes, balance change, and activities that reproduce or relieve symptoms
- Emergency, primary-care, orthopedic, neurologic, therapy, imaging, injection, medication, and follow-up encounters
- Prior back or leg episodes, diagnoses, imaging, restrictions, treatment, symptom-free periods, and function before the collision
- Later falls, lifting events, illnesses, work activity, or other events that a clinician may need to consider
Keep the clinical examination in context
The VA and Department of Defense low-back-pain guideline provides a clinical framework for evaluation and management. A record review should capture strength, sensation, reflexes, gait, range of motion, straight-leg-raise findings, pain behavior, red-flag screening, and the clinician’s assessment. A single normal or abnormal finding should not be isolated from the complete visit or used to make an independent diagnosis.
Compare imaging with symptoms and prior studies
Record the imaging date, body region, modality, indication, technique, findings, impression, comparison study, and clinician interpretation. Disc protrusion, stenosis, degeneration, or another structural finding may or may not match the side, level, timing, and distribution of symptoms. Prior imaging can help establish what was already present, but a pre-existing finding does not by itself answer whether the collision caused a new symptom, activated a dormant condition, or aggravated an existing one.
Track treatment response and function
A useful chronology records medication changes, physical therapy, home exercises, injections, referrals, work restrictions, assistive devices, missed visits and reasons, reported relief, adverse effects, and recommendations for further care. It also connects symptoms to concrete activities such as sitting, standing, walking, driving, sleeping, lifting, household work, and job tasks. Preserve contemporaneous records and avoid reconstructing daily limitations months later from memory alone.
Request a complete record set
45 C.F.R. § 164.524 addresses an individual’s access to protected health information in a designated record set, subject to the regulation’s terms and exceptions. Identify each facility, practice, imaging center, therapist, pharmacy, and billing entity; record the requested date range and format; and track missing images, reports, referrals, portal messages, flow sheets, work notes, and addenda separately.
Separate chronology from medical causation
A close temporal relationship can be relevant, but it is not a medical opinion. A causation review may consider collision mechanics, symptom onset, prior history, examination findings, imaging, treatment response, gaps, later events, alternative explanations, and whether the opinion is expressed by a qualified professional using an adequate foundation. Preserve uncertainty and disagreements rather than converting them into a promised conclusion.
The related back and neck imaging-record guide explains how to compare the order, report, images, clinical findings, prior studies, and later interpretation without treating an imaging phrase as a stand-alone causation answer.

Damage found days or weeks after a collision can complicate an insurance claim, especially when the cause of the crash or responsibility for the repairs remains disputed. A vehicle may look drivable during an initial roadside review in Charlotte, yet later show suspension problems, electrical faults, alignment issues, or damage hidden beneath exterior panels. When […]
After a car accident in Charlotte, recovery often develops one day at a time, and the records connected to that process may be less complete than expected. A person might visit an emergency room, schedule follow-up care with a family doctor, miss a physical therapy appointment because of pain, or forget to save a receipt […]
In Charlotte areas where cyclists and pedestrians frequently share the road with drivers, such as Uptown, South End, and busy crossings near greenway access points, a collision can become complicated within seconds. The police report may later serve as an important record, but officers often arrive after the impact and must reconstruct events from statements, […]
