Witness contact information and statements can preserve an account, but they do not independently establish what occurred, responsibility, or a claim outcome.

Keep the account tied to the person and time

  • Witness name, preferred contact method, date, time, location, and whether the person personally observed an event
  • The person’s own words, communication, or recording preserved with the time received rather than rewritten as a reconstruction
  • Photographs, video, report number, and other records kept separate from a witness account
  • A missing detail, later memory, estimate, or disagreement recorded as such without asking a witness to fill a gap

Preserve information without pressing a conclusion

The North Carolina Department of Insurance’s After an Accident checklist recommends collecting witness information after an accident. Safety needs and directions from responders come first.

Questions arising from a bicycle crash may be considered in a North Carolina bicycle-accident claim, which requires a fact-specific review.
