Robeson County, NC (March 14, 2026) - As reported by local authorities and regional news sources, a fatal head on collision occurred early Saturday morning along I-95 near the 5 mile marker, resulting in three deaths and one injury.
According to preliminary findings from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the crash happened at approximately 3:30 a.m. when a 2024 Mazda SUV was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of I-95. The vehicle collided head on with a 2023 Hyundai SUV that was properly traveling northbound at the time of the incident. After impact, the Mazda came to rest in the roadway facing northeast, while the Hyundai left the roadway, came to a stop facing south, and subsequently caught fire.
Authorities identified the Hyundai driver as Anastasia Nicole Zervakis of Florida, who was transported to UNC Health Southeastern in Lumberton where she later died from her injuries. Two passengers in her vehicle were also killed. One of the victims was identified as Gizelle Beniquez, born in 2018, who was reportedly not properly restrained in the back seat. The identity of a front seat passenger could not immediately be determined due to severe injuries, and that individual’s remains were scheduled for examination by the Medical Examiner’s Office in Raleigh.
The driver of the Mazda survived the crash and was airlifted to McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence for treatment. Officials said his medical condition was not immediately available. Investigators stated that neither speed nor impairment were believed to be contributing factors in the collision. Charges remain pending as the investigation continues.
How Incident Reviews Often Develop After Serious Highway Collisions
In the aftermath of a major roadway crash, attention typically shifts from emergency response to structured review and documentation. Incidents involving wrong way travel on high speed routes like I-95 are commonly evaluated through a combination of law enforcement investigation, insurance assessment, and administrative follow up. These reviews help determine how events unfolded and what procedural steps may follow.
The process can include reconstruction analysis, witness statements, and evaluation of vehicle positioning or roadway conditions. Insurance carriers may also begin reviewing policy language and coverage scope to determine how claims may be processed. Because each crash presents different circumstances, timelines and outcomes often vary depending on available evidence and official findings.
Practical Family Considerations During Recovery And Adjustment
When families are affected by serious car accident events, daily responsibilities and financial planning often require careful reassessment. Medical coordination, emotional support, and logistical decision making can become part of everyday routines as households adjust to new realities.
Several practical considerations commonly arise for families, including:
- Organizing transportation and follow up medical appointments
- Reviewing insurance correspondence and documentation requirements
- Balancing employment responsibilities with caregiving needs
- Monitoring long term rehabilitation or therapy schedules
During these periods, maintaining communication among family members and care providers can help reduce confusion and provide a clearer sense of direction.
