Newton Grove, NC (May 09, 2026) - Local reports and statements from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol indicate that three people were killed and another person suffered serious injuries following a wrong way collision on Interstate I-40 in Sampson County early Saturday morning.
According to investigators, the crash happened around 2:41 a.m. near mile marker 344 in the eastbound lanes of I-40 near Exit 343 for U.S. Highway 701. Troopers reported that a red Chevrolet Camaro was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes when it collided head on with a black Honda Accord.
Authorities identified the driver of the Camaro as 21 year old Jonathan Toxtle Zacarias of Fayetteville. Troopers said 20 year old Gabriel Toxtle Zacarias, also of Fayetteville, was riding in the front passenger seat. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene following the impact.
The Honda Accord driver suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville for treatment. Investigators also confirmed that a 14 year old girl who was seated in the front passenger seat of the Accord died at the scene. Her identity has not been publicly released.
Officials stated that eastbound lanes of I-40 remained closed for several hours while emergency crews responded to the scene and investigators documented evidence related to the collision. The roadway reopened around 7:30 a.m. Saturday morning. The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
How Serious Car Accident Investigations Often Move Forward
Major roadway collisions frequently involve a lengthy review process that extends well beyond the initial emergency response. After a fatal crash, investigators typically examine physical evidence from the scene, roadway conditions, vehicle positions, witness statements, and electronic data that may help explain how the incident occurred. Medical records, crash reconstruction findings, and communication between agencies can also become part of the broader review.
Insurance representatives, law enforcement agencies, and other parties often work simultaneously to gather information following a serious car accident. Families dealing with injuries or loss may also seek additional information about reporting requirements, insurance procedures, and documentation while trying to get help with your car accident claim during an already stressful period. These cases can involve multiple layers of review before liability and financial responsibility are fully evaluated.
Vehicle damage assessments and roadway evidence frequently contribute to how events are reconstructed after a collision. In many situations, investigators also review whether traffic patterns, driver behavior, visibility conditions, or impairment concerns may have played a role. Reporting timelines and access to accurate records can influence how quickly different parts of the process move forward.
Adjusting To Daily Life After A Serious Injury
Recovery following a major traffic collision can vary significantly depending on the extent of injuries involved. Some people may return to normal routines within weeks, while others experience longer periods of medical care, physical therapy, or ongoing limitations that affect work, transportation, and family responsibilities. Emotional recovery can also take time, especially after traumatic roadway events involving multiple vehicles or fatalities.
Long term adjustment after a serious car accident may require changes to daily schedules, financial planning, and household routines. Medical appointments, insurance discussions, and continued treatment can create additional pressure for families already dealing with uncertainty. In many cases, maintaining organized records and understanding available resources becomes an important part of managing recovery over time.
