Brunswick County, NC (October 05, 2025) - According to local reports, a 49-year-old man from Wilmington is facing multiple felony charges after a deadly head-on collision in Brunswick County earlier this month. Authorities say Jose Efren Aguilar-Lagos was arrested on October 14 in connection with the crash, which occurred on U.S. Highway 17 and claimed the life of one person while injuring several others.
Investigators allege that Aguilar-Lagos was driving in the wrong direction on the highway when his vehicle collided head-on with a car driven by Catherine Joyce. The impact resulted in the death of her passenger, 65-year-old Michael John Joyce of St. James, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Catherine Joyce sustained serious injuries and was flown to New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington.
Aguilar-Lagos and a passenger in his vehicle, identified as Pedro Serrano, were also taken to New Hanover Regional for treatment. According to arrest records, Serrano suffered a broken leg, chest trauma, and issues with breathing and neck movement. Catherine Joyce was also reported to have a broken leg.
Law enforcement determined that Aguilar-Lagos was traveling north in the southbound lanes of U.S. 17 when the crash occurred. A witness reportedly provided this information to a responding trooper at the scene. Aguilar-Lagos has been charged with felony death by vehicle and two counts of felony serious injury by vehicle.
His secured bond was initially set at $200,000 and he remains in custody at the Brunswick County jail. Authorities confirmed that as of October 16, a query had been submitted to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to evaluate whether Aguilar-Lagos would be subject to a federal detainer request.
Aguilar-Lagos made his first court appearance on October 15 in Brunswick County District Court, where a public defender was appointed to represent him. A probable cause hearing has been scheduled for October 31.
