Durham, NC (June 10, 2024) - According to local news sources, Jasmine Lee, a Durham resident, narrowly escaped when her 2013 Kia Soul burst into flames. "I am very, very lucky that I was able to get out," Lee recounted. She described the terrifying incident, explaining how she heard a popping noise from under the hood while driving. "I heard like a pop or something like under my hood and the car just disabled, like, all the lights came on and the car just cut off. It was still moving because of the momentum of the car running," Lee said. She managed to steer the car into a driveway before it became engulfed in smoke and flames.
Lee quickly called 911 and recorded the scene from a distance as firefighters battled the blaze. Her vehicle was completely destroyed. The incident brought to mind a recall notice she received in September 2023. The recall affected approximately 1.7 million Kia vehicles, including her own, due to a potential leak in the anti-lock brake system module that could cause an electrical short and lead to an engine compartment fire.
The recall was classified as urgent, advising owners to park their vehicles outside and away from homes until repairs could be made. However, nine months later, the necessary repair parts were still unavailable. "If they had done their due diligence and provided the parts that needed to be repaired, this probably would have never happened to my car," Lee lamented. She immediately contacted Kia, but her request for a rental car was denied, leaving her without transportation.
Michael Brooks from The Center for Auto Safety indicated that Lee's situation was not unique. "They (Kia) tell owners to contact their insurance and get their money for their vehicle, and then dust their hands off like nothing happened, which is a huge problem, particularly in this circumstance," Brooks noted. He warned that other Kia owners could be at risk as well.
