Investigators with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol reported that the crash took place around 1:20 p.m. when a 2013 Nissan, driven by Samara Alexandria Lowery of Maxton, was traveling north on Chicken Road. Troopers said Lowery failed to stop at the intersection and struck a 2013 Mercedes traveling west on Evergreen Church Road.
Following the collision, officials said the Nissan ran off the road to the right and came to rest facing north. The Mercedes, driven by McCollum, also veered off the road, struck a ditch, and came to rest facing west. McCollum was transported to UNC Southeastern Medical Center in Lumberton, where he died just after 1 a.m. Friday from the injuries he sustained in the accident.
First Sgt. S.B. Lewis of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol confirmed that Lowery was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle. She was also taken to UNC Health Southeastern for serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The on-scene investigation determined that disregarding the stop sign was the cause of the collision.
