Authorities say two young men lost their lives after a hit and run incident that led to a high speed single vehicle collision late Tuesday afternoon.
According to police, the incident began around 5 p.m. on Hebron Road when a 2015 Ford Explorer driven by 22 year old Jordon Jones of Durham struck another vehicle. Investigators say Jones did not remain at the scene and instead continued driving away. Just minutes later, the Explorer was traveling along the 4700 block of Denfield Street when it crossed into the opposite lane, ran off the left side of the roadway, and crashed into a tree.
Police confirmed that excessive speed was a factor in the crash. Jones was pronounced dead at the scene. His back seat passenger, 20 year old Kymarion Williams of Durham, also suffered fatal injuries and died as a result of the collision.
Two other passengers were inside the vehicle at the time of the crash. A 25 year old man and a 20 year old man were transported to a local hospital with life threatening injuries. Their names and current conditions have not been released.
Investigators have not confirmed whether anyone was injured during the initial collision on Hebron Road. As of Wednesday morning, police had not released details about the other vehicle involved in the hit and run. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are asking anyone who witnessed either incident or has dashcam footage to contact Investigator A. Roberts with the Durham Police Department.
