Upon arrival at the scene, emergency crews discovered both vehicles on the roadway. To ensure the safety of first responders and facilitate the investigation, authorities closed the northbound lanes of the highway for approximately an hour and a half. Agencies on-scene included the Winterville Community Fire Department, Winterville EMS, Grifton EMS, Bell Arthur EMS, Pitt County Emergency Management, Winterville Police Department, Ayden Police Department, Pitt County Sheriff, and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Tragically, the crash claimed the life of 41-year-old Charlien Berry, a beloved pre-K teacher at the Sadie Saulter Pre-K Center. Berry was known for her significant impact on the local community, having started her career a decade ago at Northwest Elementary School before transitioning to her recent role. The accident occurred as Berry was making a left turn from Highway 11 onto Beacon Drive when her vehicle collided with another northbound vehicle.

Pitt County Schools expressed deep sorrow over the loss, stating, “The Pitt County Schools family is deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Ms. Charlien Berry on Sunday. Ms. Berry was a beloved teacher at the Sadie Saulter Pre-K Center after serving as a teacher assistant at Northwest Elementary School beginning in 2013. We offer our prayers, thoughts, and condolences to her family and loved ones, and extend our hands out to provide support however we can.
