Surry County, NC (June 20, 2026) - Local reports confirmed that two people died after a head-on collision involving a Toyota and a moped on Red Brush Road near Sherry Lane in Surry County.
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, troopers responded to the crash after it was reported to Surry County EMS at 4:55 a.m. Officials said the collision occurred near 777 Red Brush Road, in the vicinity of Sherry Drive, during dark conditions early Saturday morning.
Investigators reported that Leonardo Molina, 28, of Mount Airy, was driving a Toyota west on Red Brush Road when the vehicle crossed left of center and struck a moped head-on. Billy Freeman, 42, was operating the moped, and Casey Snow, 43, was riding as a passenger. Both Freeman and Snow were ejected from the moped.
Troopers said Freeman died at the scene. Snow was taken to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries. After the collision, officials said Molina’s Toyota went off the left side of the road, struck a culvert and two mailboxes, and then left the scene.
Reports stated that a citizen later arrived at the crash scene and helped identify Molina’s vehicle. Investigators said Molina admitted to driving the Toyota and leaving the scene.
After consultation with the Surry County District Attorney’s Office, Molina was charged with two counts of felony hit and run involving serious injury or death, two counts of misdemeanor death by vehicle, driving while license revoked, driving left of center, and unsafe tires. Warrant information stated that the driver reasonably should have known the crash had occurred and failed to stop and render assistance.
Troopers said impairment was not believed to be a factor in the crash. Molina was held in the Surry County Detention Center under a secured bond, with one report listing the bond at $150,000. He is scheduled to appear in District Court on August 11.
How Serious Car Accidents Are Reviewed After Initial Reports
Serious roadway incidents often move through more than one review process after the first report is released. Investigators may document vehicle positions, roadway conditions, witness information, driver statements, and any citations or charges connected to the crash. Those early details can help explain what was known at the scene, while later findings may add more context as records, interviews, and physical evidence are reviewed.
In a car accident involving severe or fatal injuries, insurance questions may continue well beyond the initial investigation. Medical expenses, funeral costs, lost income concerns, and other financial effects can develop over time, which is one reason families may look to hire an auto accident lawyer while the facts are being organized.
Civil review and law enforcement review are related, but they are not the same. Police and troopers focus on public safety findings and possible charges, while insurers and civil claim reviewers often examine responsibility, coverage, damages, and available documentation. In many cases, the timeline of the claim depends on how quickly reports, records, and supporting evidence become available.
What Families May Face After A Surry County, North Carolina Car Accident
After a serious car accident, families may have to sort through insurance calls, official reports, medical records, and financial questions while still processing the impact of what happened. Mediation can sometimes provide a structured way to discuss disputed issues outside of a courtroom, giving the parties an opportunity to review evidence, evaluate damages, and work toward a possible resolution.
