Winston-Salem, NC (May 17, 2026) - As per local news reporting and police statements, two people died after a crash on the U.S.-311 to I-40 westbound exit ramp in Winston-Salem early Sunday morning.
The Winston-Salem Police Department reported that officers responded at about 1:59 a.m. to the area of U.S.-311 and the I-40 West exit ramp after receiving a report of a crash. At the scene, police found a 2008 Toyota that had been stopped and disabled on the right shoulder of the exit ramp. The Toyota was occupied by 54-year-old Shawn Dereck Arthur and 36-year-old Karen Bibb Arthur.
According to investigators, a 2013 BMW driven by 32-year-old Crystal Robles was traveling westbound on the ramp when the vehicle ran off the roadway to the right and struck the disabled Toyota. Shawn Dereck Arthur, who was identified as the driver of the Toyota, and Karen Bibb Arthur, who was identified as a passenger, were pronounced dead at the scene. Robles was not injured.
Police later charged Robles on May 27, 2026, with two counts of involuntary manslaughter, reckless driving, speeding, failure to maintain lane control, and expired registration. Reports state that she appeared before a magistrate and was issued a $500,000 unsecured bond.
The Winston-Salem Police Department’s Traffic Enforcement Unit continued to investigate the crash. Authorities stated that additional information would be released as it was confirmed and appropriate.
How A Serious Car Accident Review May Continue After Winston-Salem Reports
After the initial facts are reported, a serious crash is often followed by several layers of review. Investigators may examine where each vehicle was located, how the roadway was configured, whether a vehicle was disabled, and what evidence is available from the scene. These details can help explain the sequence of events without relying on assumptions.
In a car accident involving a disabled vehicle, documentation can be especially important because the location of the vehicle, the condition of the shoulder, and the movement of approaching traffic may all become part of the review. Clear records can also help show how injuries occurred and how recovery concerns developed over time, which is one reason people sometimes look for general information from car accident compensation attorneys when trying to understand what may come next.
Insurance questions may also arise after a serious collision. Adjusters may review police findings, vehicle damage, medical records, witness accounts, and available photographs or video. A structured process can help organize those materials so that the facts are evaluated in a more complete way.
What Families May Face After A Winston-Salem Car Accident
Once the immediate reporting phase has passed, families and injured people often have questions about insurance coverage, documentation, medical records, and the timeline for resolving a claim. A car accident case may begin with an initial review of the available facts, then move into evidence gathering, communication with insurers, evaluation of losses, and possible settlement discussions or litigation if the matter cannot be resolved through negotiation.
Insurance Questions After A Winston-Salem Crash
More than one insurance policy may need to be reviewed after a serious collision. Coverage can depend on the vehicles involved, the drivers, available liability coverage, and whether other sources of recovery may apply under the circumstances.
This process can feel difficult for families who are also managing grief, medical concerns, transportation issues, or financial pressure. Careful review of records, policy information, and crash documentation can help people better understand the questions that may shape the path forward.
