Mount Airy, NC (May 17, 2026) - Local reports indicate that two people were killed and two others were injured in a two-vehicle crash Sunday afternoon at the intersection of North Main Street and West Oakdale Street in Mount Airy.

The crash was reported at about 1:40 p.m., though one report listed the response time as 1:34 p.m. Mount Airy Police, Surry County EMS, the Mount Airy Fire Department, the Mount Airy Rescue Squad, and Mount Airy Rescue responded to the scene near Oakdale Cemetery.

Officials said the crash involved a passenger car and a small-to-medium sport utility vehicle. One of the vehicles caught fire after the collision. Dennis Galarza, 32, and Stephen Brinegar, 20, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Two people who were in the SUV were transported by EMS to Northern Regional Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities had not released additional details about those injured in the crash.

Mount Airy Police said accident reconstruction personnel were working to determine how the crash occurred, including the angle of impact and the speeds of the vehicles involved. Investigators were also reviewing vehicle damage, including damage to the passenger side of one of the vehicles. Officials said the investigation remained preliminary, and no further findings had been released.

How Car Accident Reviews May Move Forward After A Mount Airy Crash

Crashes with serious or fatal injuries often involve both an immediate emergency response and a longer review of the facts. After the scene is cleared, investigators may continue examining vehicle damage, roadway conditions, witness information, and any available reports to better understand what happened before the collision.

In a car accident involving multiple vehicles and several injured parties, different records may become important as the incident is reviewed. Medical documentation, insurance information, vehicle inspection details, and official findings can all affect how questions are evaluated, and some people may later seek information from a car accident lawsuit attorney while trying to understand the claim process.

These reviews can take time because early reports may not answer every question. Factors such as speed, traffic control, visibility, vehicle positioning, and injury documentation may all be considered before insurers or other parties make decisions about responsibility and potential compensation.
