Faison, NC (February 21, 2023) - According to local news sources, a devastating wrong-way collision took place on the I-40 in Sampson County, North Carolina on Tuesday, February 21st, claiming the lives of two drivers. Russell Scott Kee, 54, of Grifton, NC and Kerry Gerald, 20, from Odenton, Maryland were the unfortunate victims of this tragedy.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol received multiple calls from other drivers on the I-40 reporting a wrong-way vehicle traveling west in the eastbound lanes. Troopers from Duplin and Sampson counties headed towards the vehicle from opposite directions, but as First Sergeant Jimmy Stahl explained, "You can only go but so fast." Sadly, the troopers arrived too late to prevent the collision.

The accident occurred near the 354-mile marker of the I-40 at around 12:54 a.m. According to First Sergeant Jimmy Stahl, Kee was driving west in the eastbound lane of the I-40 when he collided head-on with Gerald's vehicle, which was traveling east. The impact of the collision was so severe that both drivers were killed instantly.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Duplin and Sampson County Sheriff's offices, and Duplin and Sampson County North Carolina State Highway Patrol offices all responded to the scene of the accident. Faison Volunteer Fire Rescue and Sampson County EMS were also dispatched to provide assistance. The victims were extracted from their vehicles and transported to the morgue by Sampson County EMS.

The accident was investigated by Trooper S.K. Naylor with NCSHP Sampson. First Sergeant Jimmy Stahl confirmed that Kee was the at-fault driver in the collision. The I-40 was closed for about 2 and a half hours while the accident was investigated and cleared.

As of now, the potential contributing factors to the accident are not yet known. The North Carolina Highway Patrol reported that only the information on the drivers and the direction of the vehicles was able to be released at this time.

This tragedy serves as a reminder of the dangers of wrong-way driving and the importance of staying alert and aware while on the road. Our thoughts and condolences go out to the families and loved ones of Russell Scott Kee and Kerry Gerald.
