Vass, NC (May 28, 2024) - Local news outlets report that the afternoon commute on U.S. Highway 1 near Vass was disrupted on Tuesday afternoon due to two crashes that caused the closure of a northbound lane around 4 p.m.

The first incident occurred when a man, having just picked up his cat from a veterinary clinic in the 5000 block of U.S. Highway 1, experienced a tire blowout on his Lincoln passenger car while traveling northbound. The blown tire caused his car to become uncontrollable, spin around, leave the roadway, and come to a stop in the woodline facing the opposite direction. Both the man and his cat escaped without obvious injury but were transported to Moore Regional Hospital for precautionary checks by medical professionals.

While traffic was backed up from this single-vehicle accident, a secondary crash occurred just south of the first site. Authorities reported that a Honda Odyssey rear-ended a Toyota Camry due to the traffic jam caused by the initial crash. Fortunately, no injuries were reported from this collision. Both vehicles sustained moderate damage, and the outside northbound lane remained closed for about an hour while crews worked to clear the scene and remove the vehicles.

Responding to the crashes were the Cypress Pointe Fire Department, Moore County EMS, Moore County Sheriff’s Office, Vass Police Department, and North Carolina State Highway Patrol, who are investigating both incidents.
