Clayton, NC (May 29, 2024) - Local news outlets report that two people sustained serious injuries in a two-vehicle traffic accident on Wednesday morning within Clayton city limits. The collision occurred around 9:45 AM on Highway 70 at Barbour Street.

According to Clayton Police, Jackie Trotter, 62, of Clayton, was driving a 2008 Honda Pilot down Barbour Street intending to merge onto Highway 70 heading west. Trotter failed to merge properly, causing his vehicle to cross both westbound lanes of Highway 70, travel through the median, and strike a 2022 Nissan Altima traveling eastbound on Highway 70. The Altima, driven by Jonathan Williams, 62, of Goldsboro, flipped several times before coming to rest near the on-ramp to Highway 70 from Lombard Street. The Honda Pilot collided with a light pole and flipped onto its side.

Clayton Fire and Johnston County EMS personnel extricated both drivers from their vehicles. Trotter and Williams were transported to Wake Med, where they remain hospitalized with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Police Chief Greg Tart mentioned that the accident is still under investigation, and charges are pending.
