Monroe, NC (February 27, 2026) - Reports from local news sources and emergency responders indicate that a fatal head on collision claimed the life of a former local athlete Friday morning in Monroe.
Authorities with the Monroe Police Department responded to the crash shortly after 7:20 a.m. near the intersection of Goldmine Road and Riverchase Drive. According to investigators, two vehicles collided head on along Goldmine Road. When officers arrived at the scene, both drivers were trapped inside their vehicles due to the severity of the crash.
Police officers began performing life saving measures until they were relieved by Monroe Fire Department crews and Union EMS personnel. Despite those efforts, Tre’shun Wynn, 30, succumbed to the injuries he sustained during the collision.
The driver of the second vehicle involved in the crash survived but suffered serious injuries. That individual was transported to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte for treatment. Authorities have not publicly released additional details about the injured driver.
Officials confirmed that Wynn was a former Monroe High School athlete who graduated in 2014. During his time with the Monroe High School Redhawks football team, he helped lead the program to a state title appearance in 2013. Wynn finished his high school football career with 2,954 rushing yards while averaging 7.9 yards per carry. As a senior, he rushed for 1,008 yards on 92 attempts and scored 17 touchdowns. He totaled 51 touchdowns during his high school career.
Following high school, Wynn continued his football career at the University of North Carolina Charlotte, where he played from 2014 through the 2016 season. Prior to his college career, he had also been recognized locally as a “Big 22 Player to Watch.”
Friends, coaches, and former teammates described Wynn as someone who left a strong impression on those around him. Former teammates noted that he fulfilled a longtime goal of playing college football alongside close friends from Monroe.
Family members said Wynn had recently been focused on advancing his career and was preparing for a potential promotion at work. He is survived by his 11 year old daughter.
Authorities have confirmed that the Monroe Police Department continues to investigate the cause of the collision. Investigators stated that criminal charges could be considered depending on the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
Funeral services for Wynn are scheduled for March 7, 2026, at Central United Methodist Church in Monroe. Members of the community have also organized fundraising efforts to support his family.
How Vehicle Accidents Are Typically Reviewed After A Serious Crash In North Carolina
A traffic collision that results in severe injuries or loss of life often leads to a detailed review process involving multiple agencies and procedures. What may initially appear to be a straightforward roadway incident can evolve into a broader investigation as authorities gather evidence, document conditions, and reconstruct the sequence of events.
In North Carolina, crash investigations often unfold in stages. Law enforcement officers begin by securing the scene, assisting victims, and documenting roadway evidence such as vehicle positions, debris patterns, and witness observations. Accident reconstruction teams may later analyze vehicle damage, roadway markings, and timing details to better understand how the collision occurred. Insurance representatives may also conduct their own evaluations as part of claim reviews, and the conclusions reached can change as additional information becomes available.
How Traumatic Events Can Affect Mental Well Being After A Sudden Collision
A serious traffic collision can leave lasting effects that extend well beyond physical injuries. Individuals involved in or connected to a crash may experience emotional responses that develop gradually over time. Families, friends, and community members often face unexpected challenges as they adjust to the sudden disruption caused by a tragic event.
Processing these experiences can vary widely from person to person. Some individuals may find that the emotional impact becomes clearer only after the immediate emergency has passed and daily routines begin to return. Maintaining open communication among family members and trusted support networks can help people better understand what they are feeling and how to move forward during difficult periods.
Unexpected accidents can bring about reactions such as:
- Feelings of shock or disbelief following the sudden loss of a loved one
- Difficulty concentrating or returning to familiar routines
- Heightened anxiety when traveling or driving
- Emotional fatigue as families work through grief and uncertainty
- A need for extended support from friends, community members, or counselors
Communities often play an important role in helping families process events that affect many people at once. In areas like Monroe, where local schools, athletic programs, and neighborhoods are closely connected, residents frequently seek reliable information and guidance about the processes that follow serious crashes. Resources that discuss procedures and support systems, including those available within the Monroe community, can help individuals better understand what steps may unfold after a roadway tragedy.
