Sanford, NC (February 14, 2026) - As reported by local authorities and regional news sources, three people were killed in a head-on collision early Saturday morning on NC-87 in Harnett County.
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 3:30 a.m. to 3:36 a.m. on February 14 near Sandstone Lane, approximately a quarter mile north of the Benhaven Fire Department’s Olivia station. Emergency alerts indicated that both directions of NC-87 were closed between Olivia Road and Broadway Road while crews responded.
Investigators stated that a 2022 Toyota Camry traveling south on NC-87 crossed the center line and collided head-on with a 2015 Chevrolet Z-71 pickup truck driven by 28-year-old William T. Underwood of Sanford. Underwood was pronounced dead at the scene. Troopers reported that he was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and required extrication from the vehicle.
The Camry was occupied by three soldiers stationed at Fort Bragg. Authorities confirmed that the driver, Spc. Romeo Mason Fleck, 22, of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and a backseat passenger, Spc. Charles Jackson, 21, were killed in the collision. A third occupant, 20-year-old Aydrian Larusch, who was seated in the front passenger seat, was critically injured and transported to Womack Army Hospital. Fort Bragg officials later indicated that Larusch was in stable condition.
Fleck was an Infantryman assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division since 2024, and Jackson served as a Combat Medic with the same division. Both had been stationed at Fort Bragg since 2024. All three soldiers were reported to reside on base.
First responders arrived to find a head-on crash blocking all lanes, with three individuals trapped inside the vehicles. The roadway remained closed for several hours before reopening around 7 a.m. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision, and no additional contributing factors have been publicly confirmed.
Understanding the Review Process After a Fatal NC-87 Collision
In the immediate aftermath of a serious crash, the initial reports often represent only part of the overall picture. As investigators gather physical evidence, review vehicle data, and analyze roadway conditions, a more complete understanding of what occurred can take shape over time.
In cases involving fatal injuries, multiple agencies may coordinate their efforts. Law enforcement typically conducts a detailed reconstruction, while insurance carriers begin their own evaluations. When military personnel are involved, additional internal review procedures may also apply. These parallel processes often unfold gradually, with findings clarified through official reports and documented findings.
When Families Consider Professional Guidance After a Fatal Car Accident
Following a fatal or life changing crash, families are often left managing both emotional strain and practical responsibilities. In addition to funeral arrangements and medical updates, there may be questions about insurance benefits, liability assessments, and long term financial stability.
Several important considerations often influence whether families seek professional guidance:
- Understanding how insurance coverage applies to multiple vehicles and parties
- Reviewing accident reconstruction findings once official reports are released
- Assessing potential long term financial impact on dependents
- Coordinating communication between insurers and other involved entities
When uncertainty lingers, families typically look for clear explanations about available options and procedural timelines. Careful documentation, preservation of evidence, and measured communication often play a central role in protecting future interests.
In communities such as Sanford, where residents may travel frequently along corridors like NC-87, these processes are not unfamiliar. Those seeking more localized information about handling roadway incidents in the area sometimes review resources such as legal guidance in Sanford to better understand how similar matters are typically addressed within North Carolina.
Finding Steady Direction After a Car Accident in Sanford, North Carolina
Moving from information to informed decision making can feel like a significant step. While official investigations focus on determining how a crash occurred, families often need guidance on how those findings may affect insurance claims and potential civil matters. Legal professionals frequently adjust their approach as new evidence emerges, including updated medical records or finalized collision reports.
As Attorney Matthew Fleishman explains, “Every serious crash has layers that unfold over time. Our role is to help families understand what each new piece of information means and how it may influence the path forward.” This measured approach allows strategies to evolve alongside the facts rather than rushing conclusions before investigations are complete.
For those who want a clearer understanding of how accident reviews typically develop, it can be helpful to explore your car accident options and see how different circumstances may shape available remedies. Timelines, insurance responses, and investigative findings often interact in ways that are easier to navigate with structured guidance.
