Greensboro, NC (March 12, 2026) - Local news outlets report that a Southeast Guilford High School student suffered serious injuries after being struck and run over by a school bus in Guilford County on Thursday morning.
According to statements from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the incident occurred at approximately 9:05 a.m. near the intersection of Edgemont Road and Spring Mill Road along SR-3313. Authorities indicated that the student had missed the bus as it traveled westbound on Edgemont Road and began running alongside the moving vehicle in an attempt to catch it.
Investigators said the student reportedly lost balance while running next to the bus and fell beneath the rear portion of the vehicle. Troopers stated that the bus driver did not see the student fall, and the bus ran over the student’s legs in the roadway. Emergency responders from Guilford County EMS transported the injured teen to Moses Cone Hospital for treatment of serious injuries. Family members later reported the student sustained a broken hip and cuts to the leg and required surgery. Officials indicated the student is expected to survive.
Authorities confirmed that 11 other students were aboard the bus at the time of the incident. Those students were safely transported to Southeast Guilford High School on a separate bus, and no additional injuries were reported. The bus driver was also taken to a hospital after experiencing a panic attack following the event.
Guilford County Schools stated that district officials are cooperating with the ongoing investigation being conducted by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. At this time, no charges have been announced, and the circumstances surrounding the incident remain under review.
Understanding How School Bus Incidents Are Typically Reviewed
Early reports from serious roadway events often provide only an initial snapshot of what occurred. In situations involving school transportation vehicles, investigations usually unfold in stages as officials gather witness statements, review vehicle positioning, and analyze safety procedures that were in place at the time of the incident.
These reviews may also involve coordination between school districts, law enforcement agencies, and insurance representatives to determine how the sequence of events developed and whether any contributing factors played a role. Questions surrounding visibility, pedestrian movement, and roadway conditions are commonly examined as part of the broader effort to understand how similar incidents can be prevented in the future.
