Charlotte, NC (June 06, 2026) - Information from local news reports, court records, and police statements indicates that a two vehicle crash occurred at approximately 9:15 p.m. in the 4300 block of North Sharon Amity Road, near Central Avenue in east Charlotte.

Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department officers arrived and found a Honda Civic with its driver, 17-year-old Angelina Naomi Chicas, unresponsive inside. A 2018 Chrysler 300 and its driver, 66-year-old Roderick Gresham, were also located near the Honda.

Chicas was transported by MEDIC to a hospital with life threatening injuries. She was later pronounced dead. Gresham was taken to a hospital with injuries described as non-life threatening.

The preliminary investigation indicated that Chicas was attempting to turn onto North Sharon Amity Road when the Chrysler struck her Honda. Police initially stated that speed did not appear to be a factor for Chicas. He stated that he was alone in the Chrysler and preparing to merge into the right lane before turning right onto Central Avenue. Gresham reportedly said he did not know how fast he was traveling and maintained that he was not speeding.

Police obtained arrest warrants for Gresham on July 9. He turned himself in to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office on July 11 and was charged with involuntary manslaughter, reckless driving, and speeding. Records indicated that he posted a $35,000 bond and was released from custody.

Gresham appeared in court on July 13 and was reportedly using a wheelchair because of injuries connected to the collision. His next court date was scheduled for July 31.

Chicas had worked for approximately two months at Manolo’s Bakery in east Charlotte and had left work shortly before the crash. Local reports stated that she used her earnings to help support her mother and younger brother. Coworkers remembered her as curious, eager to learn, and smiling when she said goodbye on the evening of the collision. A roadside memorial was later placed near the crash site.

Police said Chicas’ next of kin had been notified. The investigation remained active and ongoing, and authorities indicated that additional information would be released as it developed.
