According to the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department, officers along with Charlotte Fire Department and MEDIC responded at approximately 8 p.m. to the 4300 block of Central Avenue, between Kilborne Drive and Sheridan Drive, after reports that a pedestrian had been struck.
When first responders arrived, they located a Chevrolet Express Van stopped in the right lane of the northwest direction of travel on Central Avenue. The driver, identified as 69 year old Jose Marcos Cornejo Basoalto, remained at the scene.
Authorities reported that 48 year old Tavaris Demell Crouch was found unresponsive in the left lane of Central Avenue, positioned further back from the van. MEDIC pronounced Crouch deceased at the scene.
Police stated that speed did not appear to be a contributing factor in the crash. Cornejo Basoalto was screened for impairment and was determined not to be impaired. Officials noted that impairment status for Crouch remains unknown pending toxicology results. Next of kin has been notified. No criminal charges have been announced at this time, and the investigation remains active and ongoing.
