Delco, NC (August 24, 2026) - According to local reports and emergency responder statements, a woman riding a moped died after a van struck her from behind on U.S.-74-76 shortly after sunset Monday.

The collision occurred around 8:24 p.m. in the 23000 block of U.S.-74-76. Tammy Gore Vargas, 53, of Dew Oil Plant Road in Delco, was traveling east when a Dodge Caravan driven by Hope Marie Agler, 42, of Burgaw, hit the rear of the moped.

Emergency responders reported that Vargas was thrown forward and died at the scene. She was wearing a helmet approved by the U.S. Department of Transportation, and investigators determined that the moped had a functioning taillight. A rear light was found after crews removed the moped wreckage from the front of the van. Reports indicated that no additional reflector or reflective material was found.

Authorities said Agler was believed to have been traveling near the posted speed limit of 55 mph. The impact left the moped lodged in the front of the Caravan. Both vehicles came to rest in the eastbound travel lanes, which remained blocked for several hours while investigators examined and cleared the scene.

Trooper M.L. Cartrette investigated the collision for the North Carolina State Highway Patrol under the supervision of Sgt. J. Morton. Agler was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
