Smithfield, NC (January 26, 2026) - According to local reports and police statements, a head-on collision Monday afternoon left one person critically injured and resulted in charges against a Smithfield driver.

Smithfield Police said the crash occurred at approximately 4:39 p.m. on Buffalo Road just north of Hospital Road. Authorities reported that Brandon Capps, 45, was driving a 2004 Chevrolet SUV southbound when he crossed the centerline and collided with a northbound 2017 Toyota passenger car operated by 57-year-old Jose Calzadilla, also of Smithfield.

Elizabeth Martinez, 37, of Smithfield, was riding as a passenger in the Toyota. Emergency responders stated she became pinned inside the vehicle following the impact and suffered critical injuries. Firefighters from Smithfield and Selma worked for more than 30 minutes to extricate her from the wreckage before she was transported for medical treatment.

Police confirmed that all occupants involved in the crash were wearing seat belts at the time of the collision. Capps was charged with failure to reduce speed and failure to maintain lane control. Officials noted that the investigation remains ongoing and that additional charges have not been ruled out as authorities continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Reviewing Contributing Factors After a Serious Head On Collision

Motor vehicle crashes often require coordinated review by multiple agencies before a complete picture becomes clear. After an initial crash summary is released, investigators typically continue gathering evidence, reviewing statements, and examining physical damage to determine how and why the collision occurred.

The process can involve traffic investigators, emergency responders, and insurance representatives, each evaluating different aspects of the event. In serious injury cases, documentation of roadway conditions, vehicle positioning, and compliance with traffic laws may all play a role in understanding contributing factors and determining what developments may follow.

How Injury Crashes Are Investigated and Documented

When a collision results in significant injuries, authorities generally conduct a detailed review that extends beyond the initial response. Measurements taken at the scene, photographs, and officer observations are often used to reconstruct how vehicles moved before impact. These steps help create a clearer timeline and support objective findings.

A detailed crash review often includes:

  • Examining skid marks, debris fields, and vehicle resting positions
  • Reviewing driver statements and any available witness accounts
  • Assessing roadway markings, signage, and visibility conditions
  • Analyzing vehicle damage patterns to understand points of impact
  • Confirming compliance with traffic laws and posted speed limits

Physical evidence frequently plays an important role in either supporting or clarifying early assumptions about what happened. Investigators may also coordinate with medical personnel to document injury severity, which can influence how a case proceeds from both a public safety and administrative standpoint.

In communities such as Smithfield, North Carolina, these investigative steps help maintain transparency and accountability following serious roadway incidents. Local residents seeking general information about regional legal resources sometimes review pages such as car accident representation in Smithfield to better understand how similar cases are typically addressed within the state.
