Sims, NC (June 5, 2024) - According to local news sources, a Wilson County man was injured Wednesday after wrecking a car he bought the day before. Jose Ignacio Linares Jr., 31, of Sims, was headed east on N.C. 42 when he ran off the road and struck a concrete culvert and driveway, according to investigating Trooper J.L. Smith of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. The single-car wreck happened at 8460 N.C. 42 W. around 3:50 p.m.

Smith reported that Linares had just purchased the 2025 Toyota Camry on Tuesday. The crash sent parts of the car flying in all directions and knocked the engine out of its compartment. Smith estimated that the vehicle flipped over twice before coming to rest on its side perpendicular to the direction of travel on the two-lane road. Firefighters had to cut off the car’s roof to get Linares out of the vehicle.

Smith estimated Linares’ speed between 70 and 75 mph in a 55 mph zone, indicating that charges are pending. Linares was alone in the car, and there was no driver impairment or mechanical problems. An EastCare medivac helicopter flew the driver to ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville following the crash. His condition was not available Thursday afternoon.

Firefighters from the Rock Ridge and Kenly fire departments responded, along with Wilson County EMS and the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office for traffic control.
